Abstract
Roller chain drives are one of the main systems used in industry to convey power and products. Since roller chain drives are widely used, production efficiency is highly dependent on the performance of the roller chain. Roller chains suffer from premature elongation (“stretch”) due to wear and require frequent replacement, which negatively affects productivity and increases operating costs.
This white paper will provide information beyond the obvious, such as lubrication and general maintenance to extend the wear life of roller chains, to other factors such as roller chain component manufacturing, preparation and assembly. A critical factor in achieving maximum wear life. Diamond's strict specifications and quality control, among other factors, are key to maximizing the life of your drive and minimizing operating costs.
Lubrication and Maintenance
The importance of properly lubricating and maintaining roller chains during operation cannot be overemphasized. Strict adherence to lubrication type and method, based on drive specifications, will not only reduce wear but also yield other benefits such as cushioning of shock loads and heat dissipation. But lubrication is only part of the process and is necessary to maximize the life of your drive. It is equally important to choose a high-quality supply chain.
Elongation due to wear is a normal phenomenon in drive operation. The rate of wear depends on several factors; these include: proper lubrication, load, and frequency and degree of connection between the pin and bushing. The manufacture of critical wear components, pins and bushings, demands the strictest attention to detail. Starting from the correct selection of raw materials, the manufacture of parts, the preparation of parts before assembly, including assembly. All of these are key factors for optimal performance. If the wearing parts are not of the highest quality, the wear life of the roller chain will suffer regardless of other factors.
Abrasion elongation measurement
Wear measurements can be taken to determine if the chain has stretched to the length it needs to be replaced. To ensure accurate results, length measurements on roller chains must be made when the chain is under tension. If measurements are taken with the chain still on the sprockets, the system must be switched off and all safety procedures must be followed. The tight span of the anchor chain is the section to be measured. If the chain has been removed from the sprockets, the ANSI specified measured load should be applied to the chain to remove slack.
Measure as best you can from the center of one pin to the center of the other. The more pitches (pins) included in the measurement, the more accurate it will be. If the measured value exceeds the nominal value by more than the allowable percentage, the chain should be replaced.
